My Tour
December, 2009 — a lovely winter bike ride
Having converted my vintage bicycle into a cross country touring machine, I will traverse approximately 500 km over five days from my home in Toronto to Parliament Hill. To make the campaign more dramatic, the weather is calling for flurries and rain on almost all days.
My route will take me along Highway 2 on the edge of the lake Ontario to Brockville, at which point I will go north by concession roads before following the Rideau Canal to Parliament Hill. Along my journey I will stop at the houses of friends and strangers.
As I pass through the country side with a Dutch, Danish and Canadian flag flapping behind me, my mind will continue to race around the questions that drove me to such an attempt to raise awareness. Is climate change an issue that has exposed our preference for economic growth over moral authority ? What can one individual do in the face of a problem so large? What influence could a long winter bike ride possibly have on anybody? What should one person do in the face of a gradual extinction?
